Protection and Controls Engineer (P&C Test Engineer)
Job Description
The Test Engineer P&C 1 is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protection and control relaying systems and associated devices in transmission and distribution substations. The role involves ensuring the reliability and functionality of these systems through various testing and calibration processes.
Responsibilities
Install, maintain, and troubleshoot protection and control relaying and associated devices. Perform calibration of various types of protection and control relays and devices. Assist in creating and maintaining protection and control documentation. Support the assigned project lead with field assignments. Install, program, and maintain protection and control relays and devices. Participate in process hazard analyses. Maintain knowledge of current industry trends and practices. Perform operational checks and tests on various substation equipment, including microprocessor and electromechanical relays and controls. Troubleshoot and perform preventive and emergent maintenance on substation equipment. Operate and interpret readings from test equipment such as digital multimeters, digital oscilloscopes, insulation testers, relay test sets, and radio frequency measurement equipment. Verify wiring construction work is performed according to dthe etailed design print documentation. Document all completed work in accordance with policies and procedures. Provide technical guidance and direction to other groups on protection and control issues. Respond to system problems during after-hours on-call rotations. Provide top-level customer service to internal and external customers.
Essential Skills
Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles. Excellent computer skills. Proven troubleshooting skills. Knowledge of safe work practices. Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprint drawings. Experience with PLC control, troubleshooting, and programming. Experience with electrical troubleshooting and maintenance. Additional Skills & Qualifications
4-year BS Engineering Degree (Electrical Preferred). 0-3 years of related experience in engineering or a similar role. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications. Working knowledge of PLCs and HMIs. Experience with AC and DC systems. Field experience commissioning and/or maintaining electrical equipment is desired. Basic understanding of electrical protection and/or control circuitry is desired. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines. Good writing and communication skills.
Work Environment
The work environment involves working with advanced technologies and equipment in a substation setting. Engineers will use tools such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and relay test sets. The role requires adherence to safety protocols and may involve after-hours on-call rotations to address system problems.
