General Information
This posting/test announcement will create an eligibility list for any vacancies in this job title. The eligibility list shall be valid for one year after the list is established or until the list is exhausted.
SPPS is looking for a Pipefitter / Refrigeration, Gas and Oil Serviceworker
Position Summary
Performs skilled trade work in the installation, fabrication, service, repair, diagnoses and maintenance of heating and cooling systems, equipment, and related components.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the General Lead Pipefitter, Lead Pipefitter, Master Pipefitter and/or Maintenance supervisor.
Supervision Exercised
May exercise technical supervision over Apprentice Pipefitters.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate. Possession of a certificate evidencing the completion of a registered pipefitter apprenticeship training program. Two years of experience as a Journeyperson Pipefitter. Possession of an EPA section 608 Universal CFC certification
Must possess Competency Cards issued by the City of St. Paul, Department of Safety and Inspections as follows
- Gas
- Oil
- Refrigeration
- Steam/Hot Water
- Must possess a certificate showing completion of training in PRO 10 through the union or successfully complete this training within six month of appointment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license, or equivalent out-of-state license, including no revocations or suspensions for the two year period prior to the date of employment. Please note that a candidates driving record will be reviewed prior to an offer of employment.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and safe work practices of the pipefitting trade. Knowledge of the full range of terms, principles, regulations, and procedures associated with pipefitting installations including: HVAC systems, boiler systems (steam and hot water), hydronic heating and cooling system, and condensate return systems and skill in installing, servicing and maintaining pneumatic/electrical control systems. Knowledge of building constructions methods. Possess basic computer & mobile device skills, including proficiency in a corrective & preventive work order system, word processing and data manipulation. Ability to understand and apply procedures for installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration systems and temperature control devices, and steam and hot water systems. Working ability to understand and follow drawings, blueprints and oral instructions. Ability to interact effectively with all customers. Ability to assist in identifying and responding to the needs of all customers. Ability to complete required departmental forms, records, and daily reports in a thorough and timely manner. Ability to frequently withstand repetitive motion of the neck and trunk. Ability to frequently lift up to 15 pounds. Ability to occasionally lift equipment, tools, and supplies of up to 50 pounds, maneuver them around obstacles and under adverse conditions. Ability to occasionally push and pull various tools. Ability to frequently get in and out of awkward positions while working in limited space. Ability to kneel, crouch, squat, reach to shoulder height and above for up to 30 minutes at a given time. Ability to occasionally climb ladders. Ability to operate a lift.
Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties
Installs, repairs, dismantles, reconditions, cleans, and tunes fuel oil, propane, and gas burning heating equipment. This includes, but is not limited to: condensing and atmospheric boilers, power burners, kilns, unit heaters, etc. Installs, fabricates, assembles, dismantles, repairs, and maintains piping systems, used for steam, hot water, fuel oil, natural gas, propane, refrigerants, compressed air, etc. Installs, services, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains all heating and cooling systems as well as their related systems and component parts. This includes, but is not limited to: boilers, chillers, air conditioning equipment, air compressors, pumps, feed water systems, condensate systems, etc. Installs, services, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains pneumatic and electrical systems, controls, and parts on all heating and cooling systems. This includes, but is not limited to: receiver controllers, PE/EP valves, tubing, starters, motors, control boards, etc. Provides preventative maintenance services to all heating and cooling systems, equipment, components, and related parts. Repairs and repacks valves; inspects and repairs pressure, temperature and water level gauges. Cuts, taps and threads pipe; welds and solders pipe. Works with the departments Storekeeper to coordinate the procurement of materials and resources required for the effective completion of work assigned. Contributes to the District's Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
This is a 12 month position working 40 hours per week.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with Pipefitters negotiated labor agreement. The labor agreement and salary schedule can be found at https://www.spps.org/Page/33566. The minimum rate of pay for this position is $58.94 hourly.
