If a candidate doesn t have direct IBM HATS experience, here are the skills and background areas that indicate they can ramp up quickly

Core Technical Foundations

Mainframe Interaction Knowledge Familiarity with 3270/5250 terminal emulators, TN3270/TN5250 protocols, or similar legacy systems. Java/J2EE Development HATS customization relies heavily on Java, so strong Java coding and integration experience is critical. Web Technologies HTML, CSS, JSP, and servlets since HATS transforms green screens into web interfaces.

Integration & Middleware

API Development and Testing Experience with SOAP/REST services, as HATS often exposes mainframe functions via APIs. Enterprise Integration Patterns Working knowledge of MQ, ESB, or similar middleware for connecting mainframe to distributed systems.

Legacy System Familiarity

COBOL or RPG exposure (not mandatory, but helpful for understanding mainframe workflows). Batch processing and job scheduling experience (e.g., JCL).
