The Battery Test Engineer I is responsible for executing test activities, data analysis, and validation processes for LFP batteries and Battery Management Systems (BMS) used in Commercial & Industrial (C&I) energy storage systems and residential low-voltage battery products. This role supports new product development team by designing test setups, performing performance and reliability evaluations, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with internal engineering teams and external battery suppliers to drive product quality and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Battery Testing & Validation Develop, execute, and maintain test plans for battery cells, modules, and packs used in C&I and residential energy storage systems. Perform performance, safety, cycle life, thermal, and reliability tests aligned with product requirements and industry standards. Set up and operate test equipment such as battery cyclers, data loggers, environmental chambers, power analyzers, CAN/Modbus communication tools, etc. Support Design Validation (DV), Engineering Validation (EV), and Production Validation (PV) test activities for new product development. Analyze test results, identify anomalies, and provide clear recommendations to design and production teams. Battery Data Analysis Process and interpret large sets of battery test data including voltage, current, SOC, SOH, temperature, impedance, and cycle performance. Utilize tools such as Python, MATLAB, or Excel for automated reporting and trend analysis. Present data-driven insights to cross-functional teams to support design decisions and product improvements. BMS & Communication Test and validate BMS functionality including battery cell balancing, protection algorithms, SOC/SOH estimation, and communication protocols. Work with CAN bus, Modbus, UART or other communication interfaces for diagnostics and data extraction. Troubleshoot BMS-related issues and support firmware validation efforts. Supplier & Cross-Functional Collaboration Communicate with domestic and international battery suppliers to address technical issues, test results, failure analysis, and product development updates. Collaborate closely with internal teams including mechanical, electrical, firmware, and manufacturing engineering to ensure test coverage and product readiness. Support battery design validation, manufacturing readiness, and production ramp-up activities. Test Setup & Lab Operations Design and build custom test fixtures, wiring harnesses, and setups for battery and BMS evaluation. Ensure safe operation of high-voltage and low-voltage battery systems following established lab protocols. Maintain test equipment calibration, test logs, and documentation according to engineering standards.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, or related field. Experience with battery testing, energy storage systems, or lithium-ion battery technology—preferably LFP. Strong understanding of BMS functions, SOC/SOH estimation methods, and battery safety principles. Hands-on experience with test equipment and battery cyclers, environmental chambers, and communication tools (CAN, Modbus). Ability to analyze technical data and generate clear reports. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Preferred
Experience in C&I energy storage systems or residential energy storage products. Familiarity with UL, IEC, or other battery and ESS safety standards. Experience collaborating with battery suppliers and global engineering teams. Programming or scripting experience (Python, MATLAB) for data automation.
