The Automation Engineer is responsible for providing technological and programming support for a highly technical and automated glass facility. Typical equipment supported would include unique process equipment, robotics, programmable logic controllers, vision systems and process computers. Performance is measured against speed and yield variances to budget for both tempered and laminated products as well as against the achievement of plant quality and safety goals.
Responsibilities Include
Program, configure, and troubleshoot Fanuc robots for material handling and assembly. Integrate robotic systems with vision systems and PLCs to achieve seamless communication. Conduct preventive maintenance and ensure optimal robot performance. Design and deploy machine vision applications for inspection, and robotic guidance. Configure cameras, lighting, and vision software to meet production requirements. Develop, modify, and maintain PLC programs (Allen-Bradley, Modicon, or similar). Integrate PLCs with robotic and vision systems for synchronized operation. Troubleshoot control systems, sensors, and field devices to minimize downtime. Lead automation projects from concept through commissioning. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, production, quality, etc.) Document system designs, procedures, and training materials. Ensure compliance with safety standards and industry regulations. Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality through automation. Stay current with emerging technologies in robotics, vision, and controls.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, or related field or equivalent Experience. 3+ years of experience in automation engineering, with direct exposure to Fanuc Proficiency in PLC programming (ladder logic, structured text). Experience with machine vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, or similar). Strong understanding of industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, ProfiNet). Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings. Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills. Strong communication and teamwork abilities. Experience with robotic simulation software (e.g., Fanuc ROBOGUIDE). Knowledge of HMI development and SCADA systems. Familiarity with safety standards (ANSI/RIA, OSHA). Project management experience in automation integration.
