Role & seniority: Medical Insurance Verification Specialist (entry to mid level)
Stack/tools: EPIC (plus but not required); payer portals; insurance verification/eligibility tools; pre-registration and registration systems; IAMS logs; data entry of demographic/financial/clinical info
Verify insurance coverage/benefits and obtain referrals, authorizations, or pre-certifications as required
Collect patient data, confirm identifiers, estimate patient self-pay portions, and document in systems
Communicate with patients/families and internal teams (Patient Accounting, Finance, clinic leads), track referrals/authorizations, follow up on delays, and forward supporting docs
High School Diploma or GED
2+ years in benefits/referral coordination, insurance verification/authorization, AR, or medical billing in healthcare
Strong computer skills; familiarity with payors/payor portals
EPIC experience or ability to pull data from EPIC
Bilingual English/Spanish (a plus but not required)

MUST HAVE: 2-4 years of medical insurance verification experience! EPIC is a PLUS but not required!
Description
Verifies insurance coverage and benefits utilizing all available verification and eligibility tools and calls payers when needed. Documents all ascertained information into the registration system. Verifies and/or obtains the necessary referral, authorization, or pre-certification prior to services being provided as required by the payer. Obtains the patient’s information to facilitate the verification of the unique patient identifiers for clinical purposes, billing and collections process, and compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements. Estimate self-pay portions after benefits have been determined (deductibles, co-pays, non-covered services). Documents and follows up on efforts to promote team and clinic awareness. Collects up-to-date demographic information from patients and families. Maintains regular communication and follow-up with patients, families, to include: team leaders, Patient Accounting, Finance, etc. Keeps all applicable parties informed of pending referrals, authorizations, unanticipated delays, and/or other potential issues. Forwards supporting documentation in a timely manner to Care Centers, Patient Accounting, and clinical areas where applicable. Maintains browser and all IAMS Error Logs in a timely and accurate manner. Responsible for the accurate, complete, and timely capture and data entry of patients’ demographic, financial, and clinical information into the various information systems including pre-registration and/or scanning information systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required.
2+ years related experience in a benefits/referral coordinator/insurance verification/authorization job/AR/medical billing in healthcare setting required.
Bilingual ENLISH/SPANISH would be a huge PLUS, but not a must
IDEAL TO HAVE EPIC as they will be pulling data from EPIC (companies that use it: Hopkins, UMMS, Mercy, UMFPI)
Must be familiar with all payors and payor portals
Must have STRONG Computer skills
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $23.00/hr.
