Establish and maintain quality standards, frameworks, and reference practices across teams and portfolios. Guide leaders on quality risk, technical debt, and release readiness at scale. Ensure quality engineering practices remain pragmatic, sustainable, and fit‑for‑purpose. Automation & Tooling Strategy (Including Limited AI Enablement) Define organizational automation strategy across testing layers (unit, API, integration, UI, platform). Evaluate and recommend testing tools that improve efficiency, reliability, or insight—including use of AI‑assisted features where appropriate (e.g., test impact analysis, defect pattern insights). Set guardrails for tool adoption to avoid over‑reliance on opaque or low‑signal automation. Ensure all tooling integrates cleanly with CI/CD pipelines and promotes fast, trustworthy feedback. Technical Authority & Quality Architecture Act as a technical authority for automation architecture, test strategy, and quality system design. Review complex test solutions and frameworks for scalability, maintainability, and long‑term cost of ownership. Promote strong foundations: testability, observability, contract testing, and deterministic verification. Guide teams on balancing automation depth, coverage, and cost. Coaching & Capability Development Coach Senior QEs, QE Leads, and engineering leaders on advanced quality engineering practices. Mentor other coaches and technical leaders, strengthening organizational QE capability. Develop playbooks, patterns, and examples that teams can adapt to their context. Support QE career development and maturity models without direct people management responsibility. Metrics, Risk & Continuous Improvement Define and interpret quality metrics that provide actionable insight (escaped defects, test health, stability, coverage effectiveness). Identify systemic quality risks across platforms and dependencies. Lead cross‑organizational improvement initiatives based on data and observed patterns. Use analytics thoughtfully to inform decisions—not to replace engineering judgment. Cross‑Organizational Influence Influence decisions across engineering, product, architecture, and platform teams without formal authority. Act as a trusted advisor during major initiatives, platform changes, and high‑risk releases. Facilitate alignment on quality tradeoffs, standards, and long‑term sustainability. Required Qualifications Experience 10+ years of experience in Quality Engineering or Software Engineering with strong QE focus. 7+ years in senior QE, principal, or enterprise coaching roles. Proven impact on quality practices across multiple teams, systems, or portfolios. Experience driving meaningful improvements in automation effectiveness and release confidence. Technical Expertise Deep understanding of: Modern SDLCs (Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, trunk‑based development) Advanced test design and risk‑based testing Automation architecture and testing at different layers Hands‑on experience with modern automation tooling (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, API testing tools). Familiarity with analytics or intelligent tooling used to support testing and quality assessment. Strong understanding of distributed systems and integration risk. Tooling & Emerging Technologies (Supportive, Not Central) Practical experience evaluating emerging testing capabilities, including AI‑assisted features. Ability to clearly articulate when such tools add value and when they introduce risk or noise. Experience establishing boundaries and expectations around tool usage to maintain test trustworthiness. Preference for explainable, observable, and maintainable test solutions. Leadership & Coaching Capabilities Exceptional coaching and facilitation skills across technical and leadership audiences. Ability to influence senior stakeholders through expertise, clarity, and data. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Sound judgment balancing speed, quality, innovation, and reliability. Preferred Qualifications Experience defining enterprise QE standards or maturity models. Background in reliability engineering, platform engineering, or systems architecture. Experience leading quality efforts through large‑scale transformations. Contributions to internal quality frameworks or communities of practice. What Success Looks Like Quality engineering practices are consistent, transparent, and scalable. Automation remains reliable and cost‑effective as systems grow more complex. Teams have clear, trustworthy signals for release readiness. Tooling—new or established—serves engineers rather than distracting them.
