Systems & Automation Engineer
About the Opportunity This is a hands-on technical role within a fast-growing fintech/mobility startup that operates a ride-to-work benefit and leasing platform across New Zealand with big growth goals. The business is scaling a financed leasing product that significantly expands its operational complexity — and this role exists to own the systems and automation layer that makes it work reliably at scale.
You'll be joining at an early stage with real ownership, building a comprehensive lease management system from a solid but lean foundation. The work is meaningful, the scope is broad, and the opportunity to shape the platform architecture is genuine.
The Role Reporting directly to the Founder, you'll own end-to-end delivery of the systems and automation roadmap across a low-code stack. That means taking intended business outcomes — whether a new feature, a rule change, a customer request, or an operational problem — and translating them into clean, repeatable, testable workflows. You'll implement, test, release, and document changes yourself, while progressively lifting the platform's reliability and scalability over time.
This isn't a purely technical role in isolation. A big part of the value you bring is the ability to take ambiguous, messy real-world inputs and convert them into consistent system logic — states, rules, data structures, and workflows that hold up under edge cases and volume.
What You'll Be Working On
Accounts receivable and accounting integration — establishing payment handling workflows, automating receipt allocation and reconciliation, implementing dunning logic, and creating auditable links between operational events and financial records.
Lease lifecycle management — building exception-handling workflows for early terminations, returns, damage reporting, and other lifecycle events; reducing manual exceptions through clear system state and rule definitions.
Onboarding and credit application workflows — developing a rule-based eligibility and assessment framework, implementing internal review queues with auditable decision logs, integrating third-party verification providers, and ensuring onboarding outcomes automatically configure downstream system settings.
Longer term, the role evolves into scalability uplift, stronger observability, AI and agentic workflow opportunities, and broader systems thinking across sales, support, and customer success.
The Tech Stack
Primary: Glide Apps, Make.com, KNIME, eSignature tooling, Xero Secondary: Akahu (payments/bank integration), Postmark (email)
What We're Looking For You're a strong fit if you think in workflows and edge cases before you think in tools. You can take a vague outcome and turn it into a structured, testable system response. You're comfortable working in an evolving environment — roadmap priorities shift, and you can stay productive and ship reliable work regardless.
Specific strengths we're looking for: translating desired outcomes into clear workflows and rules, proactive edge-case identification and consistent handling, end-to-end implementation discipline (build, test, release, document), and a genuine care for data integrity across operational and financial records.
Experience with the specific stack above is valuable, but the core skill is systems thinking applied to operational complexity. If you've built automation workflows in similar low-code environments and have an instinct for what breaks at scale, we'd like to hear from you.
