Role & seniority: Ophthalmic Technician / Basic Ophthalmic Testing – entry to mid-level support role supporting study activities and patient care.
Stack/tools: Trial frames, lensometer, tonometer (Tonopen/applanation), transilluminator, Amsler Grid/Test tools, color vision plates, basic ocular motility tests; ERG/FST protocol testing; Electronic Medical Records (EMR); Microsoft Office (Excel/Word/PowerPoint/Outlook); study documentation and GCP/CITI as applicable.
Perform ophthalmic testing per protocol (refractions, visual acuity, low vision/pinhole testing, pupillary assessment, anterior chamber depth, motility, confrontation fields, Amsler, color vision, tonometry) and document results.
Maintain exam rooms and equipment (instrument calibration, stock, inventory/medication expiration checks, cleaning/disinfection, adherence to drop guidelines).
Ensure study compliance and documentation (navigate EHR, record findings, attend in-services, review GCP/CITI as required, obtain/maintain protocol-specific examiner certifications).
Must-have skills: High school diploma; prior medical office experience preferred; ophthalmic experience strongly preferred; ability to perform/record ophthalmic tests accurately; proficient with EMR and common software; ability to learn new applications quickly.
Nice-to-haves: Prior study/clinical trial experience; GCP/CITI certification or willingness to obtain; familiarity with protocol-specific testing
SUMMARY Performs preliminary ophthalmic testing and ensures compliance with study while providing continual quality patient care and a collegiate work environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This role requires a variety of physical activities to effectively perform essential job functions. The position involves frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%), with regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%). Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs. Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands are essential, as the role demands constant grasping, writing/typing, and use of technology. Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus—is required 100% of the time. Occasional driving or climbing may also be necessary.
