About The Role

The Automation Engineer role at Amazon TA is a critical position within our Operations division, focusing on maintaining and optimizing automated systems across our fulfillment centers. This role involves significant travel within London, approximately 50% of weekly time, to regional sites. As an Automation Engineer, you will be at the forefront of deploying and supporting advanced automation technologies, ensuring the seamless operation of conveyor systems, sortation machinery, and other automated equipment. Your expertise will directly impact our ability to meet delivery deadlines and enhance operational efficiency. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including controls, maintenance, and engineering, to troubleshoot issues, implement improvements, and support new installations. Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess a solid foundation in automation and engineering principles. Essential qualifications include experience with PLC-controlled automation systems and troubleshooting in a continuous process or production environment. An engineering degree or equivalent qualification such as a Higher National Diploma (HND), Higher National Certificate (HNC), BTEC National Diploma, NVQ Level III/IV/V in Engineering Manufacture, or a fully accredited apprenticeship with relevant follow-on qualifications is required. Candidates should have practical experience supporting a variety of conveyor and sortation systems, along with fluency in English for effective communication. Preferred qualifications include familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Office, project management software, EPLAN, Ladder Logic programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Codesys PLCs), SCADA platforms like Ignition, Human Machine Interface (HMI), EthernetIP, Profinet, Profibus, fieldbus networks, VFDs, safety gateways, and input/output devices. Certifications or experience in safety standards and network protocols will be advantageous.

Responsibilities

The core responsibilities of the Automation Engineer include monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairing key automated systems to minimize downtime and ensure operational continuity. You will work with the EU Controls network to oversee Material Handling Equipment (MHE) metrics and provide data visualizations to internal stakeholders, enabling data-driven decision-making. Leading or actively participating in continuous improvement projects will be a vital part of your role, driving efficiency and technological advancements across sites. You will collaborate with various departments to maintain accurate documentation and backup libraries for all systems, ensuring knowledge transfer and system resilience. Supporting the installation and commissioning of new equipment in conjunction with global colleagues is essential, as is providing technical support to other sites within the EU Controls network. Additionally, you will interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, develop improvement strategies, and ensure compliance with IEC 61131-3 standards. Your proactive approach to problem-solving and process optimization will directly contribute to Amazon's operational excellence.

As an Automation Engineer, your day will revolve around ensuring the smooth operation of automated machinery such as conveyors, sortation systems, and other robotic equipment. You will be the go-to expert during system malfunctions, diagnosing issues swiftly and implementing effective solutions to reduce downtime. Your role involves close collaboration with Engineering Technicians, providing guidance on troubleshooting and preventative maintenance to enhance system reliability. You will also be involved in planning and executing system upgrades, participating in projects to introduce new automation technologies, and continuously seeking ways to improve existing processes. Working during early or late shifts to perform maintenance with minimal disruption is common, and your proactive approach will help keep our operations running seamlessly.
