Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we’ve designed the satellite network with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
To deliver on that mission, Amazon is looking for talented candidates who are intellectually curious, have solved complex problems, and have a demonstrated ability to get the right things done quickly and effectively.
In this role, you’ll join Amazon Leo's Power Systems Test team as a Test Engineer. This is a hardware engineering position focused on power system verification in our satellite mass-production facility. You will innovate and solve engineering issues that arise during the test of each satellite's integrated power system, specifically covering production, integration, testing, storage, handling, shipping of the Leo spacecraft. You will be supporting the vehicle integrated test operations line along side Design, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to improve operational efficiency, deploy new test procedures, and develop engineering dispositions related to non-conformances. You will work hard, have fun, and make history!
This Test Engineer will require familiarity and expertise on design, manufacturing, test, validation, and qualification of modern power systems for autonomous vehicles (drones, satellites, EVs, etc.).
Key job responsibilities
The position requires specific coverage with two scheduling options: either Sunday through Thursday during standard business hours, or Sunday through Wednesday with extended 10-hour days, with both options designed to align with the team's in-office presence to maximize collaboration.
Be the first point of contact between production, test, and design teams for
operational support and triage of issues during integrated satellite power
systems testing and manufacturing
Work to implement new tests, processes, and tools to aid the testing, storage,
and shipping of satellite power systems components and integrated systems
Identify and implement opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, and
robustness of all test processes
Develop standard repairs, rework procedures, propose design for manufacturing
and test (DFM/DFT) improvements, improved processes and work instructions; and
training for new operators and technicians
Develop reporting tools on test KPIs, lead small integrated product teams
between customers, stakeholders, and suppliers
Work with Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering experts to provide root
cause failure analyses and implement corrective actions that reduce repeat
non-conformances
Although not routine, this role may require standing for long periods of time,
climbing up and down ladders, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing,
stooping, and stretching. The role may require lifting up to 25lbs unassisted.
A day in the life The Test Engineer in this role is primarily responsible for ensuring that the satellite power system is tested comprehensively during satellite full rate production. You will be an expert on the hardware and software that test the satellite power system. You will audit existing tests, author/sign-off on new tests, and disposition non-conformances with root causes that may span across the system’s software and hardware stack-up. You will also own corrective actions, ensuring that mysteries get solved, test coverage gaps are closed, and repeat non-conformances are eliminated. This role also has strategic responsibilities. Specifically, you will feed-forward lessons learned and influence the power systems test infrastructure, test systems, and processes for next generation satellites. We want individuals who are ready for this challenge and want to reach beyond what is possible today.
About the team The power systems test organization (working within the wider Electrical Engineering organization) is responsible for testing the Amazon Leo satellite integrated power system, which is composed of multiple sub-systems such as the solar array, battery, etc. The team builds complicated hardware and software systems that develop, prototype, test, and qualify satellite power systems. We are responsible for power systems testing cradle to grave—specifically, from early phase development efforts all the way through mass production and on-orbit
operations. Basic Qualifications: - BS degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
4+ years of demonstrated experience in a operations, design, or test role
within the battery, energy storage, solar, consumer electronics, automotive,
aviation, or space industry
Experience in requirements definition, verification compliance for complex
electrical systems
Ability to dive deeply into electrical schematics to perform root cause
analysis on unexpected power systems faults Preferred Qualifications: - Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
Experience with the project management of technical projects
Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to build and execute complex,
comprehensive system-level test plans
System test verification experience in the area of power conversion, power
systems, solar, battery, electric vehicles, satellites, or rockets.
Experience deploying solutions to solve complex and ambiguous problems in
manufacturing, automation, and test
Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or
similar) to analyze test data, manufacturing metrics, interface with test
equipment, and visualize results
