We are seeking a security-focused Sr. Automation Engineer to build and maintain the automated systems that support our nation's defense missions. You will be responsible for developing secure automation solutions across the entire lifecycle, from building hardened CI/CD pipelines (DevSecOps) to automating infrastructure provisioning and compliance checks in classified environments. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of scripting, infrastructure-as-code, and security principles. Your work will be essential for accelerating the delivery of secure, reliable, and compliant capabilities to the warfighter while reducing manual overhead and human error.
Responsibilities
Design and implement secure, scalable automation frameworks suitable for operating in classified (SIPRNet, JWICS) and unclassified (NIPRNet) environments. Collaborate with cybersecurity, operations, and development teams to identify opportunities for automation that enhance both security posture and mission velocity. Establish and enforce best practices for DevSecOps, ensuring security is integrated into every stage of the automation lifecycle. Builds and configures automation scripts, bots, and orchestration workflows. Write robust scripts (Python, PowerShell, Bash) to automate security compliance checks, STIG (Security Technical Implementation Guide) application, and operational tasks. Build and manage hardened CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitLab CI or Jenkins, integrating automated security scanning (SAST, DAST, IAST) and container security checks. Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform or Ansible to provision and configure secure infrastructure in DoD cloud environments (e.g., AWS GovCloud, Azure Government). Develop automated tests to ensure system functionality, security compliance, and operational readiness. Maintain and enhance existing automation scripts and pipelines, ensuring they remain compliant with evolving DoD security mandates. Monitor the health and performance of all automated systems, responding to security alerts and system failures in a timely manner. Develop reports and dashboards to provide visibility into key DevSecOps metrics, such as deployment frequency, vulnerability scan results, and compliance status. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related technical field. 10+ years of relevant experience Proven experience working as an Automation Engineer or DevOps/DevSecOps Engineer within a DoD, Intelligence Community (IC), or other federal agency environment. Hands-on experience building and managing automated systems in classified and air-gapped networks. IAT/IAM Level II or III certification (e.g., CISSP, CAP, Security+, CISM) required. Cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer) or infrastructure automation certifications (e.g., HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate, Red Hat Certified Specialist in Ansible Automation) are a strong plus. Active Top-Secret Clearance with ability to obtain TS/SCI.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Strong proficiency in one or more scripting languages, such as Python, PowerShell, or Bash. Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, workflow automation platforms, and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) tools. Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform or Ansible in a secure, compliant context. Deep understanding of containerization (Docker) and container orchestration (Kubernetes/OpenShift), including hardening and security best practices. Experience with major government cloud platforms (AWS GovCloud or Azure Government). Familiarity with automating compliance and vulnerability scanning against DoD STIGs.
