Chrome 150 has introduced experimental memory-debugging tools for AI agents. With the right setup, an agent can capture V8 heap snapshots, compare memory usage, and investigate which objects are preventing memory from being released. See the Chrome 150 update.

So, can an AI agent find a memory leak?

Sometimes. It can accelerate the investigation, but it still needs a tester to define what counts as a leak.

A useful memory experiment needs:

1. A stable baseline after the application has warmed up.
2. One repeatable journey, such as opening and closing a modal.
3. The same journey repeated at least 10 times.
4. Heap snapshots taken before and after the repetitions.
5. A clear pass condition, such as memory levelling off within an agreed range.

Before recording, clear the console and remove active breakpoints. DevTools can retain objects of its own and distort the results.

Compare the snapshots and look for steadily increasing retained memory, detached DOM nodes, event listeners surviving navigation, or objects that remain reachable after a feature has closed. Then apply the fix and repeat exactly the same experiment.

The agent can point to a suspicious object or retaining path. The tester controls the scenario, questions the evidence, and proves that the fix works.

The valuable skill is not asking, "Can you find a memory leak?"

It is designing an experiment that makes the answer provable.

Junior tester: Build a small example with a detached DOM node and document the retaining path.
