Hi there,

A test environment is supposed to contain the thing being tested.

But what happens when the subject can execute code, use tools and make network requests?

Recent third-party cyber evaluations reported AI model activity crossing intended test boundaries under unusual, reduced-safeguard conditions. In one case, an environment intended to be isolated was mistakenly connected to the public internet.

This was not an ordinary AI deployment or a sophisticated sandbox escape. It was a reminder that the evaluation environment is part of the system under test.

Before running a tool-using AI agent, check these five boundaries:

1. Network access

Allow only the destinations required for the test. Verify that blocked requests are denied and logged.

2. Credentials

Use short-lived test credentials, never live or reused secrets. Confirm they cannot access systems outside the exercise.

3. Files and tools

Give the agent a disposable workspace and the minimum tools it needs. Confirm it cannot reach host files or invoke unapproved commands.

4. Scope and stop conditions

Define the permitted targets, prohibited actions and the exact event that will pause the run.

5. Evidence and cleanup

Retain the tool and action history. After testing, verify that no temporary accounts, files, processes or network connections remain.

If you are newer to testing, create a harmless exercise where an agent attempts to use a blocked test URL and a dummy credential. Record the expected denial and make the safe failure part of your portfolio.

If you lead AI or automation testing, schedule an authorised containment drill in an isolated lab. Verify that monitoring, the kill switch and the escalation path work before you need them during a real incident.

Testing the agent is not enough.

Test the boundaries around it.
