Hi there,

Your upload test passes with test.pdf. Would it still pass with My Resume.pdf?

Selenium 4.49, released on 9 September, fixed a Selenium Grid error when downloading files whose names contain spaces. The release also added Python BiDi upload tests that verify files actually reach the server.

That first bug was in the testing infrastructure. It is a useful reminder to check both the application and the tools we use to test it.

This week, pick one upload-and-download journey and try these five checks:

1. Use realistic filenames. Try My Resume.pdf, José García CV.pdf, and report.final.v2.pdf. Check that names survive the journey without unexpected changes.
2. Check receipt. A selected filename or success message is only part of the evidence. Confirm that the application received and stored the intended file.
3. Check the download. Open the downloaded file. Verify its contents and filename, rather than stopping when the download starts.
4. Repeat the filename. Upload two different files with the same name. Does the application replace, rename, reject, or confuse them? Compare the result with the expected behaviour.
5. Interrupt and retry. In a test environment, interrupt a transfer and try again. Look for partial files, duplicate uploads, and misleading success messages.

If you are building your testing portfolio, record the filenames, expected behaviour, actual result, and supporting evidence. This makes a focused case study.

If you maintain automation, add a few representative filenames to an important file-handling test. When it fails, establish whether the problem is in the application, browser, or test infrastructure before choosing a fix.

One ordinary filename can expose an assumption your clean test data never challenged.
