Hi there,

You upgrade Selenium, run your tests, and the build fails before a browser even opens.

The cause could be a type declaration in a helper nobody has touched for years.

On 21 September, Selenium announced a change planned for version 4.51: Java’s ExpectedCondition will stop implementing Guava’s Function interface.

The affected pattern is specific: code that stores or passes a Selenium expected condition using com.google.common.base.Function. Passing conditions directly to WebDriverWait.until(...) or implementing ExpectedCondition with a lambda is unaffected.

This week, give one Java automation project a small maintenance check:

  1. Find the dependency. Search for com.google.common.base.Function, then inspect where it is used with Selenium expected conditions. Include shared helpers.
  2. Check the type. For affected declarations, Selenium recommends Java’s java.util.function.Function or an appropriate ExpectedCondition type.
  3. Make a focused change. Update the affected code in a branch. Keep unrelated dependency upgrades separate so failures are easier to investigate.
  4. Compile, then test. Check compilation and run representative tests using those helpers. Include a condition that succeeds and one that times out.
  5. Record what you verified. Note the Selenium version, changed helper, and results. Passing on your current version is useful evidence, but compatibility with the target release still needs verification when available.

If you’re learning automation, this makes a manageable portfolio exercise: explain the dependency, show the change, and document your checks.

If you maintain a shared framework, check which suites depend on the helper and assign an owner before upgrade day.

A few minutes spent checking an old assumption now can save a much longer investigation later.

Yours in testing,
Farid Vaswani
